 History of Liceo Maria Curie

In the school year 1963-64 the Liceo Scientifico was a section of the Liceo Classico “G. F. Porporato”, under the administration of principal Marzari Chiesa.

Since 1972-73, the Liceo Scientifico has been an independent institution.

October 11th 1972: under the administration of the principal Giuseppina Casassa, a group of 33 teachers from the Liceo Scientifico di Pinerolo met for the first time; in that year there were 16 classes and 386 students. The first location of the school was Palazzo Vittone in the city centre, shared with Liceo Classico.

In the school year 1976-77 the Liceo Scientifico was transferred in its new and current location via dei Rochis 12 and is named after Maria Curie, an exceptional woman and scientist.

Since the beginning, Liceo Scientifico Maria Curie has chosen to combine concrete learning with the processes of modernization needed by the Italian school system. At the end of the 1980s the school launched one of the first and most important experiments at  national level: the PNI, or “Piano Nazionale dell’Informatica”, which introduced the study of Information Technology; at the beginning of the 1990s the process of innovation continued with the launch of the language classes; in those years the project  “Brocca” was also activated with  methodological innovations in the teaching of Science.

In the year 2010, a new reform  helped to modernize the school and keep up with the changes in society. With the new system the Liceo Scientifico has increased the  time allotted for the scientific subjects, maintaining  its calling  to transform the students that choose it into well balanced and complete students.

Our Liceo pays great attention to new methods, learning styles and culture. Our priorities  are as follows:

  • To provide the students with a complete and in depth education in the following courses: writing, language studies, art, history, science, math and physics;

  • an open-minded attitude towards modernization which adopts a logical-scientific method to the study of both humanistic and scientific subjects;

  • To follow a teaching method that guarantees school achievement, promoting and developing individual skills, with high level cultural activities and, at the same time, guiding and aiding the students  in acquiring higher levels of competence;

  • to give a general formation and preparation that gives the students access to all universities and other post-secondary options; at the same time it offers the students the possibility to achieve those necessary abilities to ensure an effective transition to the working world.

Through the years Curie has successfully met the formative needs of the territory, its catchment area stretched further than Pinerolo and the Liceo has strengthened its position  as a growing scholastic option. The high number of students that excel in their academic studies is a testimony of the seriousness of the work in these last decades.

LICEO SCIENTIFICO – “SCIENZE APPLICATE” OPTION

Study Plan Characteristics

The option of Liceo Scientifico called “Scienze Applicate” is characterised by the absence of Latin and a higher amount of hours of scientific subjects.

This new study plan wants to develop the learning of sciences on the theoretical and practical level in agreement with  scientific work and research through a modern learning method that sees the student active in the learning process. The teaching of the humanistic subjects and the general goals of the cultural formation of the Liceo Scientifico allow to reach, also for this option, a complete formation in the two disciplinary areas, which will offer the students acquisition of a solid scientific preparation, both theoretical and applicative. This modern outlook has as its goal the growth of the students’ capability to independently and originally use their own skills, as a preparation for university studies.
